Analysis Of The Movie The Lottery - 1216 Words

There are a lot of characters that play a huge role in the outcome of the story. Tessie Hutchinson, who was thrilled about the lottery, was the one who gets the paper with a black dot. She always wanted to participate each year but this year she wasn’t so happy about it. She complained because her family’s names were also included in the lottery drawing. Bill Hutchinson, Tessie’s husband, was the one who drew the lottery, in the end. Even though Tessie complained and protested about the lottery, he acknowledged it because it was apart of the town’s tradition. Old Man Warner has partaken in 77 lotteries over the years. He is also known as the oldest person in the Town. He believes that the lottery cleans people’s sin and allows them to be kind. He feels as if there shouldn’t be a change, and the lottery ceremony should remain as apart of town tradition. Mr. Summers, has no children, is the guy who leads the lottery ceremony. His job is to ma ke the papers and announce the drawn lottery recipient. Mr. Harry Graves, the postmaster, assists Mr. Summers in preparing for the lottery. The children and other families of the town are secondary characters in the story. Their main role is to collect rocks and cause ruckus during the lottery ceremony. Setting: The story takes place in rural part of New England, during the summer time. The lottery was held on June 27th, around 10 a.m., between the town’s bank and post office. The idea of Barbie came about when a woman named Ruth Handler was watching her daughter play with dolls. In the 1950’s, girls of all ages only had paper or cardboard dolls to play with and preferred to play with cut outs of teenagers and adult dolls. So, Ruth Handler thought to make The Teenage Fashion Doll for older girls, as a three dimensional doll, called Barbie, named after her daughter Barbara (Heppermann 2010). However, Mrs. Handler met resistance when she went to her husband with the idea, and he didn’t think her idea would work out. When they travelled to Germany, she found a doll called Bild Lilli. Romeo is a Montague who is in love with Rosaline. He finds out that the Capulets are having a feast and Rosaline will be there. Romeo goes, and meets Juliet. Little does he know that Juliets father wants her to marry Paris. Juliet is against this, and the next day, Romeo asks Friar Lawrence to marry him and Juliet in secret.
